I interviewed for this position after getting selected for the BIE II role. However, since the pay was on the lower side, I requested for an interview for data engineer II role. After two weeks I got a call from a recruiter who offered this role and asked me to prepare for two technical rounds. This is how it went:

Tech Round I

  • This round started with a general introduction followed by discussing one of my projects
  • After that we discussed a data model for a subscription service. I prepared rough notes on the coding console screen shared by the interviewer and started developing the model. As I created, I asked questions about what is the key problem we are solving. He said we wanted to know total students of a given teacher. Percentage of payments done via credit card, debit card, other modes; subscriber growth month over month
  • After some discussion over the model, I wrote the SQL queries and the interviewer added some constraints and asked me to make changes to the model
  • After this, we discussed query optimization. We discussed three approaches: query refactoring; partitioning; execution plan; joins behind the scene: merge join, hash join and nested join and some other topics. There were some basic follow ups like use of columnar database and its advantages, etc
  • Finally, there was one LP question and the round was finished. We didn't have time for me to ask questions

Tech Round 2

  • This was a hiring manager round. And lasted for around 80 minutes
  • We discussed two of my projects in detail where he tried to understand each and every process. He asked a lot of follow up questions to dig deeper
  • Next, he gave me Python question. It was about a file with lots of text in a given column. He wanted me to write a program that created a new column with the length of each sentence and only output sentences that had even number length
  • I worked through the above clarifying requirements and outliers. I asked if there can be a row with no sentence at all; if unique words have to be found out; etc. I also clarified what length of the sentence meant. In this case it was number of words and not number of characters
  • After I solved it, he added another layer asking if I can add another column that stores the average length of a word in a sentence
  • Finally, we discussed one LP question and talked about the team before the round ended

After 4 days, I got a call from the recruiter giving me the good news!
