EPAM Systems Interview Experience (Senior Software Engineer | 5.3 YOE)

Recently interviewed with EPAM Systems for a Senior Software Engineer position (Hyderabad). The recruiter initially contacted me through Naukri.com and scheduled the interviews. The entire process consisted of 5 rounds, including a client round.

Overall, the interview process was focused on problem-solving, Java fundamentals, backend development, and real-world system design concepts. The interviewers were particularly interested in understanding not just the solution, but also the reasoning, trade-offs, and production experience behind the answers.

DSA Questions Asked

  • Container With Most Water
  • Max Consecutive Ones III
  • Longest Consecutive Sequence
  • Find First and Last Position of Element in Sorted Array
  • Group Anagrams
  • Permutations
  • Next Greater Element I
  • Longest Palindromic Substring

Apart from LeetCode-style questions, I was also asked the following problem:

Currency Conversion Problem

Given a list of currency conversion pairs, find the minimum number of conversions required to convert a source currency into a target currency. Return -1 if conversion is not possible.

Expected approach: Graph + BFS.

Java Questions

  • Java 8 Features
  • Functional Interfaces
  • Lambda Expressions
  • Method References
  • Optional
  • Stream API
  • Default and Static Methods
  • Exception Handling
  • Immutable Classes
  • String vs StringBuilder vs StringBuffer
  • Multithreading basics

Stream API Coding Questions

  • Count frequency of elements
  • Sort custom objects
  • Find the second-highest salary
  • Convert List to Map
  • Partitioning and grouping examples

Collections & HashMap Internals

This was one of the most heavily discussed topics.

Questions included:

  • How HashMap works internally
  • Collision handling
  • Buckets and hashing mechanism
  • Load factor
  • Rehashing
  • Capacity growth
  • Why Java 8 introduced TreeMap-like buckets (Red-Black Trees)
  • equals() vs hashCode()
  • HashMap vs ConcurrentHashMap
  • ArrayList vs LinkedList
  • HashSet internals

  • @Component vs @Service vs @Repository
  • Exception Handling
  • Profiles
  • Actuator
  • Spring Security basics
  • Service Discovery
  • API Gateway
  • Circuit Breaker Pattern
  • Synchronous vs Asynchronous Communication
  • Database Per Service Pattern
  • Event-Driven Architecture

SOLID Principles & Design Patterns

Discussed with practical examples rather than definitions.

  • Single Responsibility Principle
  • Open Closed Principle
  • Liskov Substitution Principle
  • Interface Segregation Principle
  • Dependency Inversion Principle

Design Patterns:

  • Singleton
  • Factory
  • Strategy
  • Builder
  • Observer

Kafka

  • Kafka Architecture
  • Producers and Consumers
  • Consumer Groups
  • Partitions
  • Offsets
  • Rebalancing
  • Message Ordering
  • At-Least-Once vs Exactly-Once Delivery
  • Dead Letter Queue
  • Retention Policies

AWS

  • EC2
  • S3
  • RDS
  • Auto Scaling
  • Load Balancer

The client round was mostly around project discussions, production issues handled, architecture decisions, scalability considerations, and past experience working on distributed systems.

Overall, I found the process moderately difficult. For anyone preparing for EPAM, I would strongly recommend focusing on Java fundamentals, Java 8 Stream API, Collections (especially HashMap internals), Spring Boot, Microservices, Kafka, AWS basics, and medium-level LeetCode problems.

Result: Cleared all rounds and received an offer.
