Siemens Healthineers Technical Intern Interview Experience

I recently interviewed for a Technical Intern position at Siemens Healthineers and wanted to share my interview experience for candidates preparing for similar roles.

«Disclaimer: This is based on my personal experience. The interview process, questions, and topics may vary depending on the role, team, and interview panel.»

Interview Process

The interview invitation provided a fairly clear indication of the areas to prepare:

  • Python analytical and problem-solving
  • An open-source GitHub repository
  • Project architecture and capabilities
  • Short hands-on sessions
  • Angular
  • Django
  • FastAPI

One useful takeaway from the process was that the topics mentioned in the interview invitation can serve as a practical preparation roadmap.

Technical Interview — Approximately 1 Hour

The technical discussion was broadly divided into two sections.

  1. GitHub Project Discussion

Approximately half of the interview focused on the GitHub repository that was shared before the interview.

I prepared by understanding:

  • What the project does
  • The problem it is designed to solve
  • Overall system architecture
  • Major components
  • Key features and capabilities
  • How the components interact
  • Practical use cases

The discussion was primarily focused on understanding the project and its architecture rather than memorizing the documentation.

Preparation Approach

If a GitHub repository is provided before an interview, I would recommend going beyond the README and understanding the project from an engineering perspective.

Try to answer questions such as:

What problem does the project solve?
How is the system architected?
What are the major components?
How do the components communicate?
Why were particular technologies or approaches used?
What are the important design decisions?
What are the practical use cases?

Understanding these aspects makes it much easier to discuss the project during the interview.

  1. Core Technical Knowledge

The remaining portion of the interview focused on general technical fundamentals and areas related to my background.

Machine Learning

The discussion included ML fundamentals and concepts related to my previous work and projects.

Topics worth revising include:

  • Classification and regression
  • Model evaluation
  • Overfitting and underfitting
  • Common ML algorithms
  • Basic ML concepts and terminology

Object-Oriented Programming

The discussion included core OOP concepts such as:

  • Encapsulation
  • Inheritance
  • Abstraction
  • Polymorphism

It is useful to understand these concepts both theoretically and through practical examples.

Data Structures and Algorithms

I was given a string-based DSA problem.

The focus was not only on arriving at the final solution but also on explaining the approach and reasoning behind it.

The discussion involved:

  • Understanding the problem
  • Developing an approach
  • Explaining the reasoning
  • Writing the solution
  • Considering time and space complexity

This was a good reminder that during technical interviews, communicating the thought process is an important part of problem solving.

HR / General Discussion

There was also a short general discussion covering areas such as:

  • Academic background
  • Projects
  • Technical interests
  • Previous experience
  • General discussion about the role

Preparation Strategy

Based on my experience, I would recommend preparing the following areas.

Python

Focus on:

  • Python data structures
  • Functions
  • OOP
  • Problem solving
  • Common Python concepts
  • Writing clean and readable code

Machine Learning

Revise:

  • Classification vs. regression
  • Model evaluation metrics
  • Overfitting and underfitting
  • Common ML algorithms
  • Basic ML concepts
  • Practical use cases

OOP

Make sure you can clearly explain:

  • Encapsulation
  • Inheritance
  • Abstraction
  • Polymorphism

Also prepare simple real-world examples for each concept.

DSA

Important topics to practice:

  • Arrays
  • Strings
  • Hash Maps
  • Two Pointers
  • Sliding Window
  • Recursion
  • Basic complexity analysis

For every problem, practice explaining:

  1. What is the brute-force approach?
  2. Can the solution be optimized?
  3. Why does the optimized approach work?
  4. What is the time complexity?
  5. What is the space complexity?

Project / GitHub Repository

If a repository is provided before the interview, spend sufficient time understanding:

  • Architecture
  • Components
  • Data flow
  • Design decisions
  • Key functionalities
  • Dependencies
  • Use cases
  • Possible improvements

Do not limit your preparation to memorizing the README. Try to understand how the system actually works.

Final Takeaway

The biggest lesson I took from the interview was that you do not need to know everything. You need to demonstrate that you can understand a problem, reason about it, and communicate your solution clearly.

My preparation was mainly focused on:

  • Understanding the provided project
  • Revising CS fundamentals
  • Practicing DSA
  • Understanding my own projects and resume
  • Being able to explain my technical decisions

For anyone preparing for a similar interview, my advice would be:

«Know your resume. Understand your projects. Read the provided repository carefully. Revise the fundamentals. Practice coding problems. Most importantly, practice explaining your thought process.»

I hope this experience helps anyone preparing for a Siemens Healthineers Technical Intern interview or a similar technical internship interview.

All the best to everyone preparing.
