Amazon Internship | OA Experience – Exam Pattern & Sections
Hi, I took the Amazon Internship Assessment today and wanted to share the overall process and exam structure because it may help others who are preparing for it.
The assessment had multiple sections, and each section tested a different area.
1. Coding + Backend Development – 100 minutes
The first part had two sections:
Section 1 – Coding Question ⏱️ 45 minutes
- One coding problem
- Time limit: 45 minutes
- You need to solve and test your solution within the given time.
Section 2 – Backend Service ⏱️ 55 minutes
This section was more practical.
You are given a repository/codebase and asked to work on it based on the requirements.
The backend technology can be something like:
- Spring Boot
- Django
- or another backend framework
You choose the technology/framework based on what you are comfortable with, and then work on the provided repository.
The main challenge for me was managing the time between understanding the existing code, making the required changes, running the project, and testing the test cases.
I had some issues while working on this section, and by the time I fixed them and tried to test everything, the time was almost over.
So, one thing I would definitely recommend is:
Don't spend too much time trying to make everything perfect. Get the basic implementation working first, then test and improve if you have time.
The total time for these two sections was 100 minutes.
2. Behavioural Assessment
After the technical part, there was a behavioural section.
The questions were mainly scenario-based.
For example, you may be given a situation involving:
- Your manager/senior
- A teammate
- A disagreement
- A work-related problem
- How you would respond in a particular situation
You may have to choose which response would be most effective and which would be least effective/ineffective.
I would recommend understanding Amazon's workplace/leadership expectations before taking this section rather than randomly choosing answers.
3. Work & Interests
The final part focused more on your work experience/interests and professional preferences.
It gives them an idea about what kind of work you are interested in and how your interests align with different types of roles.
Overall Experience
For me, the backend repository section was the most challenging part, mainly because of the limited time.
The important thing is to be comfortable with:
- Reading an existing codebase quickly
- Understanding requirements
- Making changes without breaking existing functionality
- Running the application
- Testing your implementation
- Debugging quickly
If you're preparing for this assessment, I would definitely recommend practicing real backend tasks on an existing repository, not just solving coding problems.
Hope this helps anyone who has an upcoming Amazon Internship Assessment. Good luck! 🚀
If anyone else has taken the assessment recently, feel free to share your experience too. It would be helpful for future candidates.
