Hey everyone! 👋

I’m happy to share that I recently cleared my Java Intern interview! 🎉

The company conducted 4 rounds — 1 coding round, 2 technical rounds, and 1 HR round.

🔹 Round 1 – Coding Round ( DEBUGGING )

This round was a little different from the usual coding round.

There were 6 number pattern questions.

The company had already written the code, but the code was not producing the correct pattern. We had to:

  • Analyze the given code.
  • Find what was wrong.
  • Make the required changes.
  • Get the correct pattern as the output.

So, it was more about understanding the existing code and DEBUGGING it rather than writing everything from scratch.

🔹 Round 2 – Technical Round 1

This round mainly focused on:

  • Core Java concepts
  • OOPs (with HOW? followed )
  • SQL queries
  • Modifying SQL queries according to different requirements
  • Questions related to my projects

The interviewer didn't just ask for definitions. They wanted to know whether I actually understood how and why a concept works.

For SQL as well, they gave queries and asked me to modify them based on the requirement.

🔹 Round 3 – Technical Round 2

This was the most in-depth technical round.

The main focus was on my projects and database structure.

They asked detailed questions such as:

  • How does your project work?
  • Why did you choose a particular technology?
  • How is your database structured?
  • How are the tables related?
  • How does data flow through the application?
  • Why did you implement something in a particular way?

They also asked me to implement a Linked List and Merge Sort.

One important thing I learned from this round is:

If you mention something on your resume, be prepared to explain it deeply.

I was questioned about the code and projects I had worked on, including how I implemented them and why I made certain decisions.

🔹 Round 4 – HR Round

The HR round was a very good experience. 😊

It mainly focused on:

  • My background
  • Communication
  • Career goals
  • General HR questions
  • My interest in the role and company

It was more of a conversation than a technical interview, which made the round comfortable and enjoyable.

💡 MY BIGGEST TAKEAWAY

The biggest thing I learned from this interview is that knowing the definition of a concept is not enough.

The interviewers wanted to know:

"Do you really understand it?"

They focused a lot on how and why something works, rather than simply asking me to define it.

So, while preparing for interviews, I would suggest:

  1. Don't just memorize Java definitions.
  2. Understand how things work internally.
  3. Practice debugging existing code, not just writing code from scratch.
  4. Practice SQL and learn how to modify queries based on requirements.
  5. Know your projects inside out.
  6. Understand your database structure and relationships.
  7. Practice implementing fundamental DSA concepts.
  8. Be ready for follow-up questions like "Why?", "How?", and "What happens if...?"

This interview taught me that strong fundamentals + practical understanding + the ability to explain your thinking matter a lot.

I’m really happy to share this experience, and I hope it helps someone who is preparing for their first Java/SDE interview. 🚀

💬 Discussion

For those who have recently attended Java/SDE interviews, what was the one topic or question that looked simple at first but turned into a deep discussion with the interviewer?

And for those preparing for interviews — do you focus more on memorizing common interview questions, or on understanding the concepts deeply enough to handle unexpected follow-up questions?

Would love to hear your experiences! 👇
