I recently went through the Behavioral / HR round at Google for a Backend Engineer position and wanted to share my experience. Hopefully this helps someone preparing for the same.

Background

I applied through the official Google careers portal. After clearing the initial screening, I was scheduled for the Behavioral / HR round. Going in, I thought this would be the "easier" round compared to technical ones. Spoiler: it was not.

The Round

The interview was approximately 45 minutes long with a Google recruiter/HR representative. The questions were structured around the Leadership Principles style, heavily focused on past experiences and situational judgment.
Some of the questions I was asked (paraphrased):

Tell me about a time you disagreed with a team member and how you resolved it.
Describe a situation where you had to deliver under a very tight deadline.
Tell me about a project you are most proud of and why.
How do you handle receiving critical feedback?
Give an example of when you took ownership of a problem outside your responsibility.

Difficulty

Honestly, very tough and stressful. The interviewer kept digging deeper with follow-up questions. Every answer I gave was followed by "Can you tell me more about that?" or "What would you have done differently?". It felt like every answer needed to be backed up with very specific details and measurable outcomes.
What I Wish I Had Prepared Better

Have at least 6-8 solid STAR format stories ready (Situation, Task, Action, Result)
Know your numbers: impact metrics, team sizes, timelines
Do not give vague answers, Google specifically probes for specifics
Practice out loud, not just in your head

Outcome

I moved to the next round, so the preparation paid off despite the stress. Will post an update once I clear the next stage.
Tips for Anyone Preparing

Use the STAR method strictly
Focus on leadership, ownership, and conflict resolution stories
Be honest, they can tell when you are making things up
Research Google's culture and values before going in
