I interviewed with Razorpay when I had around 1 year of experience, working in Bangalore.

I received the call from a recruiter who found my profile through naukri.

Interview Rounds:

Round 1: JavaScript + Frontend Fundamentals

The first round focused heavily on core frontend fundamentals. It wasn’t just theory, they expected both conceptual clarity and ability to implement things on the spot.

There were questions around CSS positioning and layouts, semantic HTML, and JavaScript internals. I was also asked to implement things like a map polyfill and basic debounce/throttling functions.

This round was quite thorough and tested how well I actually understand the fundamentals beyond just using libraries.

Round 2: Machine Coding

This was a frontend machine coding round where I had to build a chatbot-like interface, similar to what I had seen in other interviews.

The focus again was on handling UI interactions properly — message flow, rendering, and overall behavior. Compared to earlier experiences, I was more comfortable here, but the expectation was still quite high in terms of polish and completeness.

Round 3: System Design

This was the most challenging round.

The discussion went very deep into frontend architecture, especially around microfrontends — why to use them, different approaches (like module federation, etc.), trade-offs, and real-world use cases.

They also explored:

State management at scale (local vs global)
Communication between microfrontends
Event-driven architecture
Choice of libraries and design decisions

The interviewer kept drilling down with follow-up questions, and that’s where things got tough. While I had some exposure, my understanding was more surface-level, and I wasn’t able to confidently justify decisions or go deep into trade-offs.

At one point, even my current company’s implementation was questioned, and I couldn’t defend it strongly.

❌ Outcome - I was rejected after the system design round.
