Thoughtworks | Consultant | Interview Experience | Gurgaon | Offer July 2025
I actually got a random call from the recruiter while I was on a train traveling back home from the office. It was quite unexpected, but that’s how the process started.
They shared a repository containing a project, and I could choose my preferred programming language.
🧑💻 First Round (Pair Programming / Coding ~3 hours)
My first round was with a Senior Developer who had around 30 years of experience 🤯. The interview lasted close to 3 hours and was more of a collaborative pair programming session rather than a typical coding round.
I was asked to make modifications to an existing API. The focus was not just on coding, but on:
Understanding requirements deeply
Reusing existing methods effectively
Designing clean and maintainable APIs
We spent nearly 30 minutes just gathering and refining requirements, discussing trade-offs, and even diving into API and method naming conventions. The interviewer emphasized covering all aspects of API design before moving to implementation.
One interesting moment was when interviewer asked to use the existing method, I suggested not reusing an existing method. I explained why it wouldn’t fit the current use case and justified implementing a new approach. This led to a constructive discussion, which I believe was a key part of the evaluation.
At times, the interviewer also took control, made changes, and demonstrated some useful coding and IntelliJ tricks. It truly felt like working with a highly experienced peer. I even joked that I’d pick up those tricks as I grow in my career 😄.
💡 Tip: Think out loud. Communication and reasoning matter as much as coding.
Also, Thoughtworks puts a strong emphasis on TDD (Test-Driven Development), SOLID, and OOPs, so be prepared for that mindset.
🧠 Second Round (DSA + System Design)
This round included:
A DSA question on Trees
A discussion around my current project
For the project discussion, I explained my work using diagrams and flowcharts. I walked through the entire system:
Starting from raw Excel data
Data transformation through ETL pipelines
Storage in AWS S3 and DynamoDB
Finally, how the data is served to the product/UI layer
The focus was on clarity, structure, and end-to-end understanding.
🧩 Third Round (Leadership / Behavioral)
This round evaluated logical thinking and behavioral aspects.
It may seem easy, but answering with real-life examples on the spot can be tricky.
💡 Tips:
Take a moment to pause and structure your thoughts
Build a clear story before answering
If you haven’t faced a situation, it’s okay to say:
“I haven’t encountered this yet, but if I were in that situation, I would…”
✅ Overall Experience
The process was very engaging and different from typical interviews. It felt more like collaborating with experienced engineers rather than being evaluated in a rigid format.
