SWE Internship Decision: Nordstrom (Seattle) vs Oracle (Location TBD)

Hi everyone — I’m a junior-year CS student currently deciding between two Summer 2026 SWE internship offers and would really appreciate some long-term perspective.

For context, this would be my first internship at a large, established tech organization, and I was fortunate to receive offers from both companies. I'm trying to be intentional about choosing an environment that will best support early career development, future return opportunities, and position myself well in the current hiring market going forward.

Additionally, my academic plan is somewhat flexible — I’m able to extend my graduation anywhere between Fall 2027 and Spring 2028 if needed, which would allow me to pursue another internship next summer as well.

Offers

Nordstrom (Seattle)

Role: Software Engineering Intern
Dates: June 8 – August 14, 2026
Schedule: Hybrid (4 days in office / 1 WFH)
Pay: $44.25/hr (non-negotiable)
Team: TBD closer to start date
I was able to submit team preferences based on backend interest, including:
• CXP — ECCO Team, Customer Mobile Apps & Post Purchase Experience Team
• Platform & Data Team
• MISC — Shared Services & Platform Team, Inventory Technology Team
• SET Teams (Store Experience Technology)

Placement will possibly be based on preference — otherwise, it will depend on business needs.

I received this offer about 2 weeks before my final Oracle round and was given 3 days to accept, so I accepted at the time to avoid losing the opportunity.

Oracle (Location TBD)
Role: SWE Intern (Full-Stack – AI / Data Platform)
Pay: 1,840/week)
RTO Policy: Unknown
Dates were not listed in the official offer letter, but in a prescreen email from ~2 months ago, I was told internship start dates could be:
• May 18 – August 7, 2026
OR
• June 15 – September 4, 2026

Originally interviewed for a Java SWE Intern role (Oracle Health & Analytics), but after interviews, was informed that the team was hiring FT only. I was then moved to a different org working on an AI-focused data platform with a new hiring manager, which is the team this offer was extended from.

Additionally, the offer letter does not list a confirmed location. I was told by my recruiter I could choose between several California offices or Seattle — I selected Seattle, but have not yet received written confirmation despite following up with both the recruiter and the hiring manager.
I currently have until March 5th to make a decision.

Living Situation / Finances
Nordstrom: I live in Seattle and can stay with my parents
Oracle: Location not yet confirmed — potential relocation if not placed in Seattle

Additional Considerations
If I were to move forward with Oracle for the summer, I would likely need to renege on Nordstrom, which could impact that relationship.
One potential option I’ve considered is asking Oracle whether it would be possible to move the internship to Fall instead, though I’m unsure how realistic that would be.

Nordstrom Pros
• Seattle-based (no relocation required)
• Ability to live at home → higher savings rate
• Potentially more predictable onboarding / team placement
• Reportedly strong return offer pipeline for interns

Nordstrom Concerns
• Retail tech vs traditional big tech
• Concerned about external resume signaling vs Oracle brand name

Oracle Pros
• Larger tech company / brand recognition
• Potential opportunity to work on AI / data platform projects
• Slightly higher hourly pay

Oracle Concerns
• Location still unconfirmed (possible relocation)
• Team/org clarity still evolving
• RTO policy unknown
• Slower communication during offer process
• Unclear return offer rate for interns

Main Question
From a long-term career growth perspective as a university student:
I understand internships are primarily about experience rather than compensation.

Would it be more valuable early on to prioritize the Oracle brand/big tech and potential opportunity to work on AI-driven platform work within a larger tech company — even with current uncertainties around team placement, return offer rates, location, and work expectations?
Or would gaining foundational engineering experience within the retail tech space at Nordstrom, building strong connections, and potentially converting into a future internship or full-time role be the more strategic decision for strengthening my resume and positioning myself more competitively for future opportunities in this hiring market?

Appreciate any insight — especially from those who’ve interned at either company or had to make a similar decision early in their career.

Thanks!
