Sharing my recent experience for anyone interested in the decision process.

Role: SWE3 (L4)

Process: 1 phone screen + 4 onsite rounds

Ratings received:

2 × Strong Hire

2 × Hire

1 × No Hire

Details on No Hire:

It was a Low Level Design round rather than a problem solving one, was a “restaurant ordering system” style problem.

I modeled it as a two‑person system (waiter ↔ customer). I clarified my assumption early on.

Interviewer wanted a multi‑person scenario and claims they tried to steer me there multiple times, but a "threshold was crossed" for correction.

My solution worked for the two‑person assumption but didn’t generalize.

Additionally I thought I had done well enough and the interviewer and I both agreed I had written the proper code for a simplified situation, and at the end they said "it looks good".

Recruiter feedback:

No red flags otherwise.

Team matched, HM was supportive.

However, HC decided not to proceed.

Recruiter encouraged me to re‑engage in 6 months.

My questions for the community:

Have you or anyone you know passed with a single “No Hire,” or is it almost always a blocker?

How much weight does HC put on LLD performance vs. other rounds?

For those who reapplied, what strategies worked to address this kind of gap?
