I recently interviewed with Razorpay for the role of Product Development Engineer - 1, and I wanted to share my experience hope it helps others preparing for similar roles.
Machine Coding Round:
I was tasked with designing a real-world application: A Vehicle Parking System with the following specifications:
- Two types of vehicles: Sedan and Compact.
- Track the number of Sedan and Compact cars entering the parking lot.
- Calculate parking fees: Compact ₹10/hour, Sedan ₹20/hour.
- If Compact spaces are full, they can use Sedan slots at Compact rates.
- Upon exit, notify the user of their total parking charge.
- Admin should be able to view a list of all parked vehicles.
I began by confirming the requirements with the interviewer and then outlined my approach in a shared document. Once we aligned on the design, I implemented the solution using Factory and Singleton Design Patterns in my preferred IDE. Although I took about 7 minutes more than the allotted time, the interviewer remained patient and supportive, asking insightful questions and helping navigate challenging areas. After coding, I walked through my logic and covered possible edge cases. Finally, I submitted my code via email in the interviewer’s presence.
Outcome: Positive
DSA Round:
This round involved solving a moderately complex array problem. Before coding, I discussed and optimized the solution approach.
Problem: Given a possibly rotated sorted array and an integer target, determine the target’s index or return -1 if it's not present.
Outcome: Positive
Hiring Manager Round:
This discussion revolved around advanced concepts of Golang, my past project experiences, and system design. The manager appreciated one of my personal projects — a security enhancement feature for a social media platform.
Additionally, I was given a concurrency challenge:
Problem: Suppose 100 survey forms need submission, and 99 are already completed. Two individuals attempt to submit the final form simultaneously. Ensure only 100 submissions happen, preventing any extras.
I provided a clean and efficient Golang-based solution for this.
Outcome: Positive
HR Round:
The final round was an HR conversation where the recruiter detailed the company’s culture, benefits, and growth opportunities. We also discussed salary expectations and negotiations.
Key Takeaways:
- Always clarify requirements before starting.
- Discuss your approach before diving into code.
- Master design patterns and concurrency concepts in your language of choice.
- Showcase personal projects — they reflect your creativity and passion.
Final Result: Positive
