One of my college seniors referred me for the role. It was for a Decision Scientist. After one month, I got a call from HR. She asked me some basic questions like if I have sports background and salary expectations, etc.
Then she set up my first Technical round for next week.
Round-1
Before the round, I studied a lot and read interview experiences for Decision Scientists.
On the day of the interview, it started with an introduction.
SQL
Interviewer started with some basic SQL like what is the difference between truncate and delete. Then he gave me multiple Tables and asked me to write a query. I listened carefully and then used join and group by to fetch the required output. Then he asked me how to extract a month from the date. I told him that I don’t remember the exact function but there is a function which can help us.
Data science Case studies
Then he moved to case studies since role is for decision scientist. He asked me 3 Case studies.
Which are as follows:
- Estimate the count of orders on swiggy/Zomato during IPL.
- How to find a fraud Bank transaction?
- How to implement a cab share feature in OLA/Uber?
While solving the case study I started using statistics like mean, frequency and data to explain.
But the interviewer is looking for different answers. In the 2nd use case he just rudely said to me having computer vision and deep learning in the resume will not help you and I am not seeing any use here.
Then I told him that I don't know what you are expecting in the answer. Then he told me since you performed poorly in the first one and just average in the second case study. If you perform badly in the 3rd one also you are rejected.
Suddenly unexpected thing happened my Teams shutdown and my Pc hanged in between the interview. I kind of panicked then he called me over phone. I explained the situation and he agreed to wait. Then I restarted my laptop and rejoined the call.
He told me that he will ask me for my last case study if I answered correctly then he will ask one more question on guesstimation. If I perform badly in the 3rd case study then the interview just finishes and I will get a rejection. I performed well in the 3rd case study. Then he told me he has a meeting and just go read about all the case studies which I asked, on google then I'll ask you a final question.
After 30 min we connected again. I explained all the Case study again now he was satisfied with all the answers. Then he asked me the guess estimation question.
Guesstimation:
How many cricket balls will fit in the Train?
I assume all the things like train size, ball size, etc. He also helps me in between like telling me formulas since I don't remember it. I answered correctly in the end with all the assumptions I have made. Then he told me you are through in the 2nd round. You will get a call from HR.
I didn't have a call from them for a week. Then my senior messaged me about how the interview went. I told him it went well but I didn't receive any call for the 2nd round. Then he inquired to HR and he told me I am not selected for round 2. He gave me feedback that I need to improve my data fundamentals.
After 2-3 Days I got a mail from HR stating Thank you for the interest. I think they might get better than me.
I got rejected in this interview but it is one of my favorite interviews since it taught me a lot.
I understand how to answer a Data science case study. Also I prepared a lot after this and cleared a lot of interviews after this.
