I want to share my experience working with Amazon. I'm working here from past 6 months and have gathered more than enough information to make opinion about the company.

  1. Working Hours are infinite, you need to login very early (at around 9 AM) and the manager is so disturbing that he keeps pinging even at 10 PM related to work.
  2. Peers are busy with their work and nobody talks to each other except the work related queries.
  3. On-call is horrible week where you need to be alert even in night. The pager will start blowing like a horn and you have to wake up and solve the issue. Most of the time, the issue can't be solved easily even after spending 2-3 hours then you need to ping your peers for help and if you're lucky you get the help but many a times nobody is working in night and you end up getting embarrassed in front of your manager in morning for not being able to solve the issue.
  4. Development work is not exciting, the developers spend time in useless meetings, discussions, testing, and deployment.
  5. Don't expect any help from any senior developer when you join, you are on your own foot even when you're not able to understand the things.
  6. There's a lot of confusion regarding onboarding plan, the managers aren't fully aware of how to systematically onboard a new hire to the team.
  7. There's no clear path on projects like what steps need to be followed to get the final approval. You end up reaching the deadline and couldn't deliver things which is again a huge downside.
  8. People will reply in approximately 3 days if you ask anything to them. The maximum time you can expect is till the world ends as many times nobody responds even till a month and the message becomes just cold messaging sent to some ghost.
  9. You've to stick to the dogmatic "leadership principles" in order to get recognized. Every performance metric is somehow connected to these principles and you need to follow this toxic framework created by them.
  10. There are internal tools for everything with poor or no documentation or guide which makes it tremendously difficult to work as you can't even Google things to get answer.
  11. The development process is unnecessarily complicated. For example, Amazon uses an internal tool called CRUX for code review which is built on top of git and it's a stupid redundant software.
  12. Your code reviews will get approved in 2-3 weeks when you raise them. Some reviewers will find some useless 'improvements' and then you need to publish a revision and then the another reviewer will say that the thing which is revised is not needed.
  13. Nobody values your work, you just keep on grinding yourself and suddenly a day comes when the person who will give approval to your project will say "The results are good but the testing strategy you followed should be different" and then your all efforts will be gone.
  14. The managers don't seem to understand coding and expect you to complete a task which takes 2 months to be done in 6 days.
Weekend, what is that? There are no weekends, you have to work even then.
I regret joining Amazon now. The only good part of Amazon is compensation. I feel a lesser paying job is much better than a job where you are expected to be an indentured labor.

Bye Amazon, your arrogance and toxicity will one day lead to your downfall.

This was copied from another post, but I also had the same experience during my 6 months internship, please think twice before you join amazon. Dont fall in the trap for the sake of compensation, there are many better companies offering the same compensation with better work-life balance. I am posting in compensation section for wider reach of audience.
