I recently had a pleasant experience with my Google virtual onsite. I am not looking for a role, just applied on a whim

Background
Education: BS in CS from top liberal arts college
Current Role: SWE at large tech company
Location: SF Bay Area

Screen

Phone Screen (45 mins)
Binary Tree question
Solved it, maybe not the most elegant solution though. Scheduled my "on site" for about a month later due to timing for me

Virtual On site

Round 1, Algos (45 mins)
Array question
Took the entire time to get through this question, had trouble getting an edge case and received a bit of help from the interviewer. I did a bad job with the edge case and confused myself. I felt this interview could tip either way.

Rounds 2, Domain Knowledge (45 mins)
Front end question
Really enjoyed this round, had a good conversation with my interviewer. I knew I passed this interview after it.

Round 3, Algos (45 minutes)
Very open ended and lots of aspects to this question, no single category to put it in
This question was a good one that involved a lot of parts and a lot of ways to solve it. I did not finish the problem, but me and the interviewer had a good converation about tradeoffs, and approaches to take. I explained how I would have solved it if I had more time. I felt this interview could go either way.

Round 4, Googliness & Leadership (45 minutes)
General behavior questions
This interview was pretty odd, not because of the content of the interview but because the interviewer seemed pretty unsatisfied with my answers. He was also pretty difficult to talk to, a lot of my jokes fell flat or my explanations to answers didn't seem what he was looking for. I went into this interview thinking I would pass this with flying colors as I am friends with a lot of Googlers and had several references. After this interview I felt concerned about my chanced, as I'm pretty sure I didn't pass this interview unless the interviewer was always like that (he didn't seem like a bad guy, just a lot different than the other people I talked with)

Round 5, Algos
2D Array Question
This one was rough, not because the question was difficult but I just fell flat on it. There were going to be multiple parts, but I couldn't even finish the first part. Interviewer couldn't be friendlier though. We had a friendly conversation, but I knew I did not pass this one.

Result, Takeaways, and Prep

Recruiter called me to tell me they weren't moving forward the next week. Wasn't surprised, I felt it could go either way leaning no. They do not share results, but apparently interview 1 & 5 were what did me in. Interview 2 sounds like it was a strong yes. Sounded like I didn't get any strong nos. Recruiter was very positive though, and told me he wanted me to reapply in a year, and they will move me straight to on sites.

Had a great experience with the interview, with the exception of the Googliness interview. Everyone was great and friendly. I am disappointed, but not really looking for a new role. Will probably reapply again next year.

For prep, I didn't do any prep before the phone screen. Did about 2 weeks of prep in between the screen and on site, and I used a site that is cheaper than leetcode and has video explanations of things in clear English. Would definitely recommend it. Only did easy & medium problems for prep, plus some hard due to time constraints.
