Online assessment:
I was given 2 medium LC questions, one was a string question, the other was a tree question. I passed those with flying colors. Got the go ahead for virtual onsite shortly after.

Virtual Onsite
Round 1 - LP + a medium LC question
This round went well, at least my initial thoughts because I've seen this question before and the LPs were those that I have prepared for. Question asked here was a variation of top k. Nothing too complex.

Round 2 - LP + hard LC question
This round, I bombed. The question given to me was file system but with a few twists. It was very much like Leet Code's Design In-Memory File System. The reason why it went bad is because while I had the algorithm down, I didn't ask the clarifying questions up front. For example, interviewer had no interest in me creating my own File class. Even though the algorithm was the correct one, the interviewer kept saying "you're overthinking this". And then it just became a vicious circle where I started to doubt what he actually needed. And that is why clarifying questions are so important.

Round 3 - System design + LP
The interviewer was late 30 minutes to this one. The whole time I kept thinking, if you're going to reject me and cut my onsite short, at least have the guts to tell me. But then I realized that the interviewer just completely forgot, but whichever way you look at it, it is still highly unprofressional. Because he was 30 minutes late we had to push the schedule back another 30 minutes. Overall this round went well, design twitter and LPs at the end.

Round 4 - LP + LC medium
This one I did very well on, as it was a quite a regular matrix problem. One of those, treasure island sort of questions where BFS or DFS does the trick.

Thoughts
I'm glad I actually prepared for LPs because they do drill down on your stories and you need to provide details to back up your stories. I was rejected because of code maintainability, the recruiter mentioned that I was very close to getting a yes (not sure how truthful the recruiter was in terms of proximity to getting a hire). This is something that gets lost when we do all these LCs, pay special attention how you write code. All those top answers in those LC questions with those one liners is a huge turn off for them, obviously I didn't answer in that style, but they're really big on maintainability. Lastly, I don't know if it's just luck or not, but I felt that I overprepared LC for Amazon. I didn't feel any exhaustion from thinking too much given that the algorithms implemented were already seen before.
