Amazon | SDE 2 | Seattle [Offer]

Hi All,

I recently interviewed for SDE2 role at Amazon and I'm sharing my experience to help others prepare.

My background
I have a master's degree in computer science and about 6 years ( 3 yrs in US) experience working as a Software Engineer in multiple companies. Before the interview, I completed about 250 LC problems ( 100e 125m 25h ) and went through a lot of system design videos on youtube.

Getting the call
I was reached out directly by a recruiter over email, I think she found me on LinkedIn.

Pre-Screen
It was a timed online assessment for 90 mins, consisted of two LC medium problems. These two were from the top 50 Amazon questions.

I completed the assessment with a few failed test cases. Recruiter reached out to me in a day and informed me that I'm being considered for onsite. I scheduled my onsite after 3 weeks.

Virtual On-Site:
I received my virtual on-site schedule 2 days before. The onsite had 4 rounds, each 1 hour back-to-back.

Round 1: Object-Oriented Design
The first round started with 2 LP questions, the discussion went over for 30 mins. After the LP discussion, I was asked to come up with a simple class design for one of the most commonly asked Amazon OOD questions. I explained my approach and the interviewer narrowed down the problem statement to parts he was interested in, we agreed on an approach, with 20 mins remaining I started to code. This was a very interactive coding round, I wrote about 20-30 lines of code and I was out of time. The interviewer was happy with the overall performance.

Round 2: Coding
The interviewer started with his introduction and didn't stop for the first 10-15 mins, then he moved on to LP questions which took about 25 mins. He was not happy with my LP answers and asked me to change the scenarios I'm using. After 40 mins into the interview, he moved on to the coding the portion and he set the expectation that he wants a working solution.

I was given a very vague problem statement and I asked many clarifying questions. With 15 mins remaining I was able to convince him with a solution and started coding. He stopped me midway and asked me to change the solution, I just had 5 mins remaining and was not able to come up with another solution. This was my worst round.

Round 3: Coding
This round had two interviewers, one was shadowing. It started with 2 LP questions which I wrapped up in 15 mins (lesson learnt from last round) and then I was asked to come with a solution for a medium level LC problem. This was one of the top 50 Amazon problems and I had solved it at least 2-3 times before. I coded the solution within 5 mins and walked through sample inputs. In ~25 mins we were done with the interview :). I asked some reverse questions for 10 mins and then took a break for the next 20 mins.

Round 4: System Design
This was with a hiring manager and he was really friendly. He started with few LP questions and which took the first 25 mins of the interview and then we moved on to a system design problem, this was one of the system design toping from G ro K in g system des ign course. I covered every aspect of system design concepts and he was really happy with the design.

Result
Within 2 days I was informed that I'm selected :)
