Offer from PayTm:

Application Process

I came across a Google form on LinkedIn and filled it out.
After 1-2 weeks, I received a call from a recruiter. He explained the role and process, then scheduled my first interview and also shared details about an online assessment (OA).

Interview Rounds (4 Rounds Total)

Round 1 – Technical + DSA

  • Format: Intro + Project Discussion + DSA + Java Basics
  • Started with introductions and a deep dive into my current projects.
  • Discussed my contributions, technology stack, and problem-solving approaches.
  • DSA Question: A basic Linked List problem – discussed multiple approaches and optimizations.
  • Java Questions: Focused on Lambdas and Stream APIs.

Outcome: HR called 1hr later with strong positive feedback and scheduled the next round.

Round 2 – Online Assessment (Hackerrank)

  • Question 1: Easy-level problem (don’t recall exact question).
  • Question 2: Longest Common Substring – solved completely.
Completed both questions successfully before the next interview round.

Round 3 – Core Java, Design Patterns & System Design

  • Started with detailed project discussions, technology choices, and reasoning behind them.
  • Topics Covered:
    • Design Patterns
    • Spring Boot Concepts
    • Authentication mechanisms (felt I could’ve explained this better)
  • SQL Queries

Outcome: HR informed me the next day that feedback was positive, and they scheduled the final round.

Round 4 – High-Level System Design

  • Discussion about my major contributions in my current role.
  • HLD Question: Design a system similar to Shiprocket focusing on order management and payments.

The interviewer was very professional and supportive, making it a smooth experience.

Final Outcome

After 2-3 days, HR informed me that I had cleared all rounds and shared the offer letter.

However, I declined the offer as they had a Work From Office(WFO) policy, while I prefer Work From Home (WFH).

Key Takeaways

  • Be prepared for in-depth project discussions – they focus a lot on your real-world experience.
  • Brush up on core Java, Spring Boot, authentication flows, and SQL.
  • For DSA, focus on Linked Lists, Strings, and Dynamic Programming basics.
  • System design rounds are more about clear thinking and structuring your solution, not just scale.
