My Google SWE L4 Interview Experience

I recently had the opportunity to interview for the Software Engineer L4 role at Google. As of now, the final verdict is pending, but I wanted to share my experience to help others prepare for a similar journey.
YoE: 4.5

Phone Screen

The initial phone screen included a technical question combining Tree DFS and Binary Search. I received positive feedback for this round, which boosted my confidence for the subsequent steps. Following this, I was informed that my onsite interviews were scheduled for a month later, giving me ample time to prepare.

Onsite Interviews

1st Technical Round:
The problem was the classic Knight Tour Problem on an infinite grid. Although I managed to propose a solution, the feedback was rated as average. It was a challenging start to the onsite rounds.

2nd Technical Round:
This round took me by surprise. Instead of a DSA-focused problem, it turned out to be a class design question. I was asked to design a Task Scheduler. Thankfully, system design is one of my strong suits. I confidently tackled the problem, and the feedback was highly positive. A definite highlight of the process!

3rd Technical Round:
The focus shifted back to trees. I was given a Tree-Based Subtree Deletion problem, followed by a detailed discussion on follow-up scenarios. My solution and approach received positive feedback, keeping my spirits high.

G&L Round:
The final round was the Googliness and Leadership (G&L) interview. While I felt the conversation went well, I was later informed that the feedback for this round was negative. This was disheartening, especially since I had been performing well up to this point.

Current Status

After learning about the feedback from the G&L round, I reached out to my recruiter to request another opportunity for this round. I am currently waiting to hear back regarding the next steps.

Reflections

  • Preparation is key, but adaptability is just as important. The unexpected class design round was a curveball, but my prior experience worked in my favor.
  • Interviews at Google can be as much about soft skills and alignment with company values as they are about technical expertise.
  • Communication with the recruiter is crucial if you feel you have room for improvement or deserve another shot.

I hope this provides insights into the Google SWE L4 interview process. If you’re preparing for similar interviews, focus on both technical and behavioral aspects, and don’t hesitate to advocate for yourself if needed.
Good luck!

Update: My Profile is closed now for Google!! But, I received offer letter from Apple : )
