About my background and previous experience:
I worked as a freelancer, where majorly I designed and developed 5 SaaS product for clients. All of these clients were achieved from through recommendation.
At that time, Total, 1 years of freelance experience. Before that I also interned at Amazon, as Machine Learning Intern.
College - Tier 2 (CSE 2024 Graduate)
I applied for an APM role from Google’s careers page back in December 2023. After probably 5 months, in May 2024, I received an email from HR that I am shortlisted for this role, and they are moving on with the application process. So here I am sharing my interview experience.
It started with the brief introduction of the interviewer, followed by my introduction. Then the interviewer had a discussion of my previous experiences(Freelancing), with the products I made, and approaching clients, and meeting the requirements.
Then we proceeded with the Product Design Question on improving and introducing features for Google Calendar. The interviewer was mainly focused on pain points users face, and how I will be able to solve those pain points. Also, he discussed what metrics I would consider to make sure that the pain points validation is correct. Additionally, questions from managing timelines during the product development, and releasing it to the users.
After few weeks, I got confirmation on proceeding to next round.
Product Design for a Restaurant Food Ordering Application
In this round, the interviewer directly started with the problem statement, on how to improve restaurant food ordering applications. The interviewer was interested in discussing the pain points, and how these pain points matter for the users use cases. After this, we went on in depth discussion on solving the pain points. The interviewers sought to be interested in how effective the solution will be and how it will impact the real life case. During the end minutes, we discussed validating the solution, and setting the timeline while executing this product implementation.
After the second round, I got the confirmation on proceeding to the next round, both these last two rounds were scheduled on the same day.
Product Analytical, Estimation, and Metrics
The interviewer directly started with the question, on estimating the number of queries users searched in one day. I was asked to narrow down the estimation areas, with valid reasonings. I proceeded with estimating the total population, and then dividing it under the use cases (age). So as to normalize the user count. After this, the interviewer also asked for the user types that will come under these use cases.
During this whole conversation, I made sure to validate each segment, with the necessary reasoning for the users. After the estimation, the interviewer asked on validating the number. The second question was on which domain/fields two MNCs can collaborate to solve pain points. This was a strategy based question, on identifying weakness and strength for the two, and deciding the tradeoffs, for solving these pain points.
With the last round, Product Design for Smart Kitchen
The interview started with the direct question, on designing a product for a smart kitchen. I proceeded with some clarifying questions, to just get to know what the interviewer wants. Proceeding with segmenting the users, and describing the use cases associated with it.
After the discussion over these, I proceeded with the pain points with these user segments, and prioritized them to solve first. After deep discussion over this, the interviewer was more interested in solving one of the pain points that I had mentioned. After this, we ended up discussing validating and setting up the timeline over developing the product and maintaining the lifecycle of this product.
Verdict: Got the Rejection Mail after few weeks, didn't expected the same. But life had some other plans for me
