Interview process

Recruiter phone call for 30 mins

45 min technical phone interview - Trie based question

Another recruter called and spoke 30 mins about the process and explained to me the list of things that I should prepare for onsite and what to expect in each round of the interview. They gave a couple of documents with the list of things that I have to prepare for the application engineer positions. Kudos to google, they want us to crack the interviews.

1 Hour system design
Question about domain knowledge of my current company, ran through the details for about 30 mins
Question about a system, i chose rdbms system, basic questions on the api calls, most of data modeling and more data modeling around some complex geo related stuff. I was able to answer most of them and provide solution for all the questions.

1 Hour integrations
Question about how the integrations work, given some vague requirement, my task was to find out the concrete details from the interviewer and design a system. I was supposed to drive the whole design, but, I tried it for most of the part, the interviewer was asking quesitons if I am stuck, I think I did Ok in this round.

A question about char duplicates - I think it is a medium level question- could not find it in leet code - but i gave two solutions - iterative and recursive - I think I did ok in this round - was able to complete the problem, but ran out of time when running through the example to the interviewer. But, before running it with the interviewer, i ran it once on a complex scenario.

I totally bombed this one, this one is about strings as well and it has something to do about spaces. On surface it looked like a simple question, when i started to explain the solution to the interviewer i realized that it is way more complex than i though, I was able to communicate all the scenarios and struggled to find a solution satisfying all conditions for about 25 mins then the interviewer suggested that I started doing for a normal scenario, i did about 90% code but we ran out of time, there was no time to run down the scenarios or even complete the code.

I have prepared a day /14 hours solving all the behavioral questions that I found about google, but this round was a total surprise for me, since i'm a senior candidate, the questions probably were targetted to get more leadership skills out of me. Also the questions were aimed to find out if you have the passion for innovation, which i was totaly not prepared for. The questions asked were so confusing, i had to ask it again and clarify what he was asking to finally be able to answer something in the first part of this round. All other questions were standard behavioral like hipothetical as well as situations that i have been in . Overall this is a Ok round for me as well.

I probably flunked the google and this is my dream company to work in. I spent about 8 months total preparing for interviews(10+ rejects in various rounds), got a couple of rejects in the past because of the system design, so i improved in system design in the last one month. This time I am loosing it because of algo and the behavioral. I am still waiting for the feedback, and i'm in no way interested in knowing the result and get a second heart break in a row.

As suggested by someone in one of the google post, even if you flunk in one of the algo round, they will still give you an offer, but i have only 0.00001% hope on that.
