2. What is virtual memory and how does it work?

It's a memory management technique that uses a combination of physical RAM and disk space to provide the illusion of a larger, contiguous block of memory than is physically available. Here's how it works:

  1. Address Space: Each process in a computer has its own virtual address space, which is typically larger than the actual physical RAM.

  2. Page Tables: Virtual memory works by creating a mapping between virtual addresses used by a process and physical addresses in RAM or on disk. When a process accesses a virtual address, the memory management unit (MMU) in the CPU translates it to the corresponding physical address using page tables. 3. What is the difference between a process and a thread?

A process and a thread are both units of execution, but they have some key differences.
A process can be thought of as an instance of a running program (program under execution). A thread, on the other hand, is a subset of a process. It represents a sequential flow of execution within a process (independent path of execution of a process). Threads are sometimes referred to as "lightweight processes" since they require fewer resources to create and switch between compared to processes.

  1. Isolation:

    • Process: Processes are isolated from each other, meaning they have separate memory spaces. They don't share memory unless explicitly set up to do so.
    • Thread: Threads within the same process share the same memory space, making it easier for them to communicate and share data.
  2. Resource Overhead:

  3. Creation Time:

4. What is a deadlock in an operating system and how can it be prevented?

A deadlock typically arises when four conditions, known as the Coffman conditions, are simultaneously satisfied. Mutual Exclusion, Hold and Wait, No Preemption, Circular Wait. Deadlocks can be prevented through several methods:

  1. Avoidance: Dynamic avoidance techniques involve resource allocation decisions made at runtime. These techniques use algorithms, such as the Banker's algorithm, to determine whether granting a resource request could potentially lead to a deadlock. If a request would result in a deadlock, it is denied.

  2. Resource Allocation Graph: Use a resource allocation graph to detect and prevent circular wait situations, where processes are waiting for resources in a circular chain.

  3. Resource Ordering: Assign a strict order for resource acquisition and ensure all processes follow this order. This prevents the circular wait condition.

  4. Timeouts: Implement timeouts for resource requests. If a process doesn't get the requested resource within a certain time, it can release its acquired resources and retry.

  5. Resource Preemption: Allow resources to be preempted from one process and allocated to another. This should be done carefully to avoid starving processes.

16. Difference between Paging and Segmentation.

17. What happens when we do fork()?

When the fork() function is called in a program, it creates a new process by duplicating the existing process. This new process is created as a child process of the original process.
