I'm a recent grad who's looking for entry level SDE position. I applied to Amazon's team-specific position in January 22. 5 days later, recruiter invited me to online assessment consisting of 2 questions.

Online Assessment

  1. Number of Islands: https://leetcode.com/problems/number-of-islands/
  2. Rotten oranges : https://leetcode.com/problems/rotting-oranges/

I solved them as soon as I received email. Next day I was invited to technical phone screening. I scheduled interview for the next Monday.

Phone Screening

Interviewer introduced the team, I introduced myself, then we jumped into coding question with Livecode platform.

Finally, I ask few questions about the team, culture, products, training, etc. It took 45~60 minutes.

After 1 hour(!), I received mail from recruiter that I passed phone screening. After two days, coordinating team reached out to me to schedule on-site interview. They decided to schedule interview on 2/17. They explained some interview details, such as which area I should prepare, which people I'm going to meet, etc. It was supposed to be 5 rounds + lunch buddy.

2 days prior to the on-site, recruiter called me and said they changed the interview schedule. It was still the same date, but the time had changed and now there were only 4 rounds with no lunch. They even changed interviewers, saying I'm not going to meet the original members I was supposed to meet. I don't know what happened here, but alright.

On-site

There were 4 rounds, each with 5060 minutes. (20 minutes of behavioral questions + 3040 minutes of coding)

  • Round 1: Find the sibling node in binary tree
  • Round 2: Print all boundary nodes in binary tree in counter-clockwise.
  • Round 3: Design movie booking system (Object-oriented design)
  • Round 4: Some data structure design problem

The coding part was fine. I had no problem solving any of them.

I don't remember all the behavioral questions, but I'll list some questions I was asked.

  • Tell me about time when you went beyond your job responsibility.
  • Tell me about time when you dig deeper into the problem to find solution.
  • Tell me about time when you had a disagreement with your teammate.
  • Tell me about time when you couldn't meet time commitment.
  • Tell me about time when you made a quick decision.
  • Tell me about time when you learned something new during the job.

After 1-business day, I received email telling me that I'm not selected.

Thought

I'm still not sure exactly why I was rejected. I was able to solve all coding questions correctly. I answered to every LP questions. I suppose that I didn't demonstrate Leadership Principles well enough. For example, when I was asked "Tell me about time when you dig deeper into the problem to find solution", I couldn't come up with cool answer because frankly I didn't have such experience. I talked about my in-school project where I chose the wrong data structure which caused some bugs. I changed the data structure and it worked. The situation here looks too trivial, but I didn't know what else to talk about.

Also, is it normal to get rejected in the next day? After finishing interview at 5pm, shouldn't it take more than a day to write review, evaluate interview, and make a final decision? It almost looks like they didn't want to hire me in the first place. The fact that they abruptly changed the interview schedule also bothered me.

My only tip is prepare LP questions well. Don't just talk about your situations and actions, but you also need to demonstrate leadership principles.
