I completed the Coding challenge and went straight to onsite interviews.
- First round: Got a leetcode medium question about rectangles. Completely bombed this one and the interviewer basically gave me the solution and I coded it up.
- Second round: Was given a binary tree question, basically finding a bad edge in the binary tree. Did well on this one and answered the follow up question.
- Lunch: Lunch with the engineer
- Third Round: Was given a string question. The problem was a bit different from what I interpreted it which made it more complicated and changed the algorithm. I think should have clarified and considered more test cases.
- Fourth Round: Another binary tree question related to complete binary trees. We spent a lot of time clarifying and explaining the question. The interviewer nudged me towards a more optimal solution.
Overall, I had a great experience. Google is great with their interview process. All the interviewers were really nice. Ultimately, I was rejected which I was kind of expecting.
Some tips:
- really clarify and understand the question well (didn't clarify enough for the third interview)
- watch for the time. I was really slow some of the interviews I was coding up until the last minute, so had no time for follow ups.
- Practice on whiteboard. I was hoping there would be chromebooks available but unfortunately not and my handwriting ended up being really messy on the board.
