Here's another bad experienced I've had with the big companies. I would say this one was one of the worst ones I've ever had and this time it was totally not my fault!

It's the summer of 2021 I've just had a bad epxerience with Amazon (I wrote that one here as well, some time ago) when I'm appraoched by a Microsoft recruiter. And since I was already in the mindset for an interview (because of the Amazon), I said yes.

All the recruiter told me about the opportunity is that it's a senior backend position without any mention of the level. They sent me a link to a screening test which I could take on my own time. I must say that this test was much simpler than the Amazon's. In fact, it was so easy that I doubted the whole process is worth my time. I mean Amazon's screening test involved dynamic programming which I could not solve under the time limit (my solution timed out). But Microsoft questions were like: implement a loop and find an item in an array. Long story short, I passed the screening test easily. Then the recruiter sent me this message:

Hi ...........,
I wanted to share a quick update regarding the July 23rd Interview Day. Unfortunately, it is full…but I do have another option for you to consider. I have a Senior Backend Interview Day coming up on Friday, August 27th. I will take care of all the details, you won’t need to do anything except prepare for your interviews!
Let me know if you’d like to participate! 😊
Best,
...........

I got this email on July 16 with the smiley face and everything! Since I didn't mind the extra time (I could use it to prepare better), I said OK. Then I was introduced to the next recruiter who sent me a bunch of documents to sign along some resources to study. Since there was a good deal of time before my interview, I took my time and didn't start to look into them right away.

On the morning of July 22, I received a "GOOD LUCK on your tomorrow's interview" email with a schedule and a link! I was shocked as I wasn't expecting this email. So I replied with the previous' recuiter's email telling that I was not ready. The answer I've got disappointed me:

Hi .............,
I am not sure about ..........’s email below. However, I do have you confirmed for tomorrow in our side.
Can we still count you in for tomorrow?

Apparently, I was just a quota for these recruiter which they had to fill. They didn't care about my success at all. Of course, I refused to take the interview. Then the recruiter told me that it's fine and they'll reschedule me for the next event which was due in more than a month.

Then I started my preparation studies. As I got closer to the promised date and didn't get any emails from the recruiter, I sent them an email to make sure they didn't forget about me. To my surprise, they didn't reply. The promised date came and went, and there was no sign of them. A few weeks after the promised interview date, I got an automated email from their system that I was not chosen and they've decided to go with someone else! As if I was interviewed. Since then, I've tried applying to jobs on Microsoft's website mutiple times but I've never got any emails from them (not even an automated rejection email). Even though I've got no evidence to prove it but I guess I'm blacklisted.

Moral of the story

Never trust a recruiter that types smiley faces in their emails.
