Hi All, sharing my interview experience in detail below (for compensation check end) --
Applied For - SDE - 1 Amazon
Location - IN
Status - 1.6 YOE.
College - CS - Tier 2
I found the job through linked in and applied through their jobs portal.
Got an email from the recruiter for an OA (online assessment).
It consisted of 2 coding questions and 2 explanation for those questions. i.e. code your solution and then explain it. Time Limit was 90 mins.
Question 1 -- https://leetcode.com/problems/k-closest-points-to-origin/
Question 2 -- It was a backtracking questions to form a combination of alternating sorts like 101 or 010 from a given binary string. (I don't remeber the exact question).
I completed both the questions within the time limit and gave multiple approach for the question.
Result -- The next day recruiter reached out to me and told me that I cleared and informed me that my interview should be scheduled within the next 14 days and sent me basic resources for preparation.
Interview 1 was scheduled according to my convenience with a senior engineer. The interview took place over Chime and was given the link for code editor before hand.
The interviewer explained the flow for the interview and told me that he would ask some LP questions and 1 coding question.
The interviewer started the discussion with some LP questions like -- What's your role? , your biggest task till date, how you managed this, how you managed that etc etc. It went on for about 35 mins.
Then he asked me about some time complexeties of various DS, like linked list, Tree, BST, array etc and asked me to compare. This went on for 10 mins. I explained the best I could.
After that he gave me a coding question --- Implement a BST and methods like insert, delete, search. I wrote the structure of the class and explained what I was going to do, but could not fully code even 1 method due to lack of time , I was given about 6-7 mins for this and then he moved on to do you have any questions for me part and concluded the interview.
Result -- I think i did well on LP and the initial DS questions but could have done better for coding question.
Interview 2 (both the 1 and 2 were scheduled at the same time) had the same concept. LP for about 15-20 mins and then 1 coding question.
Coding Question -- https://leetcode.com/problems/implement-trie-prefix-tree/
Result -- I coded the solution in about 15-20 mins and did dry run. Explained perfectly and the interview went well IMO.
After clearing interview 1 and 2, I was invited for interview 3. It also had the same concept. Some LP and 1 coding question.
The LP this time were a little more complicated but I was able to answer from my experience.
Coding Question -- A variation of https://leetcode.com/problems/rotting-oranges/.
Explained all the scenarios and discussed edge cases before coding the solution. Coded an optimal solution and justified it with a dry run.
Some more questions about code, complexity etc.
Was able to code the solution in about 15-20 mins.
Result -- It went well IMO and interview 4 was scheduled.
It was scheduled with a senior personnel. Was given an easy question to code and was given 5 mins to code it.
Explained multiple approaches and coded the solution.
Some LLD questions, use case diagrams etc and lot of tricky LP questions.
Result -- It went well IMO. I was able to discuss and give solution and also factor in any changes/inputs that were given.
In about 5 days I was given an offer.
Resources Used --
LeetCode (https://leetcode.com/list/954v5ops/), Striver's SDE sheet (https://takeuforward.org/interviews/strivers-sde-sheet-top-coding-interview-problems/), also watched his youtube video explanations solved a lot of questions apart from those present in these lists.
Solved about 80 easy, 100 medium and 20 hards on leetcode alone.
For LLD and HLD, I watched Exponent and lot of other youtube channels to get an idea.
Overall Opinion -- A lot of focus was on LP and there was a pattern of time crunch. I realized it after my first interview that I needed to be faster in order to code an optimal solution.
