I recently graduated from a Tier III college from a non-CS branch .I have 6 months of intern experience in multiple startups in full stack development . I started applying to top companies in July but found that there were almost no openings for recent grads . I applied to Amazon for 4 position all through referral , all of them showed Under Consideration for a long time but still no response . Luckily after 2-3 weeks I got the link for Online Assesment
Round 1 : Online Assessment
This was a 90 min test on Hackerrank . It consisted of 1 LC Easy (937 Reorder Data in Log Files) (based on priority queue) and 1 LC medium (sorting + two pointers) (Don't Exactly Remember) . Had to give the approach as well . I was able to solve both of them easily . It also had a work survey which was based on LP .
Result : Cleared , Got the call on the same day had scheduled 2 rounds 13 days later .
Round 2 : Virtual Onsite (Coding Round)
This is was taken by an SDE III . He asked me to introduce myself . As soon as I mentioned I was a recent grad and he abruptly paused and asked Wait ! you are a fresher ???
He muted himself and there was an awkward pause for about 30 secs (maybe he was talking to recruiter ) . He then gave me a Medium problem on Finding the row with max Sum containing only 0/1 and are sorted. and I was able to come with a Brute force almost immediately and then later Optimized it further . He then mentioned it could still be optimised further . I spent a lot of time trying to come up the best solution and with a few hints I was able code the solution . He then gave me a Medium problem on Tree DFS traversal (Print Tree Boundary ) . I was able to code the solution really quickly as there wasn't much time left . At the end I was able to solve and code both the questions .
Round 3 : Vitual Onsite (Coding Round)
This was taken by 2 SDE II . They asked few questions about my internships and then straight jumped into the question . It was a LC 279 : Perfect Squares which I had solved way back , couldn't remember the logic but didn't gave up . I came up with a recursive brute force approach almost immediately. But I took a little time solving the bottom-up tabulation approach . But luckily I was able to code it as well and the interviewer was satisfied with the solution . As the time was almost over he asked me few more questions on my resume and the interview ended .
Verdict : Rejected
Got the call on the same day from the recruiter that they would not be moving forward with me .
To be honest I really can't figure whether how as both of the interviews went really well for me or maybe I lacked something I dont know . I just hope they didn't reject me just because I had no experience .
Anyways this was a learning experience for me . I have decided not to wait for freshers jobs in top companies as my career gap has already started . Maybe I'll get some experience from a startup and then later apply .
Although things didn't work out for me but I am still proud of my performance . Being from a Tier III college and a non CS branch and already wasted first 3 years of college , I really turned my life around in the final year . Started from nothing and came this far on my own , pushing myself beyond my limits , It really has been a hell of a ride.
