Status: New grad, BTech ECE (Tier-1)
Position: SDE1 at Paytm
Date: September, 2021
Prior Experience: 6 months intern at a unicorn startup

Round 1- Online Assesment - 70 mins
Questions:

  • Find the maximum number of consecutive ones in a binary string.
  • Find sum of alternate levels in a binary tree.
  • Third was a string manipulation question, I dont remember it but it was quite easy.

Round 2: Technical Round 1

  • Discussion about my internship work and what subject i like from my core branch (none :p)
  • Then he asked what is my faviorite ds and i told him tree, so he told me to do iterative inorder traversal of a tree, i got stuck a little bit but with his help i was able to solve it.
  • Then he told me to find N-th node from the end in a linked list, i told him the brute force approach of doing two traversals and then optimized to one traversal.
  • Then he told me to remove the last occurance of a given node in a linked list in a single traversal, after discussing for a few minutes a arrived at an optimal solution.
  • He then preceeded to ask me about indexes in DBMS and gave me a query which required the use of joins.

Round 3: Technical Round 2

  • The interviewer asked me to introduce myself and then asked me the famous trapping rain water problem
  • I solved the problem using 2 arrays keeping the left and right max, she told me to do it in o(1) space but i was not able to come up with an approach.
  • Then she asked me to find if a linked list has loop or not and why does this approach work, i explained her the hare and tortoise approach and she was satisfied.
  • Then she asked me about Deadlocks like what are the conditions that cause Deadlock and how can we prevent Deadlock.
  • Then she asked me questions on OOPs concepts like difference between Abstraction and Encapsulation, what are Abstract classes, Difference between Interfaces and Abstract classes.

Round 4: HR Round
He asked me basic HR questions like why do you want to join our organisation, what is your location preference etc.

Then the next day afternoon we got the results and I along with 10 others were selected for the role :)
