Anyone else have a hard time with phone interviews and only phone interviews?

I had an online assessment with Amazon and did fine and was able to move forward to an onsite. I had the onsite and I think I did pretty good and I am waiting to hear back.

However, I was able to get 2 phone interviews with Microsoft and I bombed both. These phone interviews are so much more awkward and difficult, IMO, than just going to an onsite or doing an online assessment. All the phone interviews I had technical issues trying to get their online code tool to work or they asked me to try and solve the problem verbally on the phone without any online code tool for them to look at.

Then you have to try and explain what you are thinking over the phone without the interviewer really being able to see what you are talking about. Or there are awkward moments of silence when I am trying to think through the problem and they can't see me writing stuff out.

How the heck do I get better at these? I can pass any online assessment given to me to get to an onsite and then I do great at onsites, but I just can't get past these phone interviews for some companies.

Any tips?
