Good for nothing topic

A quick search yields that someone from Russian had invented a ternary computer system before.
Just some random imagination: What if...
What if the computer uses base-3 (ternary system) to store data, it would be 96% savings (correct me if I am wrong) per byte (3^8).
We can actually come up with 6561 ASCII code table. Compress more and occupy less space.
The web site kept on saying there are three voltage level (-1, 0, +1) which could be of use. Just saying.
