I am from India and an engineering dropout. I have 4 years of industry experience and currently working in an US product-based MNC.

I joined Mechanical engineering. Been programming from first year of college, and had completely no interest in mechanical. Yes, it was a mistake to take mechanical, but truth is I didn't have enough exposure at that time while choosing my stream. After 3rd year, decided to drop-out as I was not interested as well as the things I am going to read I am not going to definitely use in the future. Also, found few dropouts are joining FAANG in the US. I expected the same trend would follow in India in 2-3 years and luckily got job in a startup without a degree.

Just like most of the people, I also want to work in the FAANG. I have started preparation. I was also checking the job descriptions and requirements in linkedin and found for most [not all] of the interviews requirements has bachelors ( including Amazon and Microsoft ) thus shattering my confidence.

I read online those companies doesn't care for educational qualifications, but having education requirements in those description is making me uncomfortable. Even in one of the Google's JD in India, I found education as a basic requirement.

A typical interview experience of an individual is like, attended X ( ~30-50 ) no of interviews. Based on the X interviews, they get enough experience in the interview process thus improving them in confidence & in-person/whiteboard/virtual problem solving, greate the X greater the probability of success.

In my case, I can't attend those X interviews because I am eligible for only x/4th interviews.

Questions,

  1. How do I approach for getting interviews? Usual suggestions would be getting referrals, but what if I fail in those? I am not afraid of failure, what I am afraid is, If I fail using a referral, how do I get another referral from the same company? I guess, I can't ask the same person. Also, I guess not a lot of people prefer referring a dropout (in India).
  2. How do I reduce my rate of interview-failure?
  3. How to ace the interview within less number of interview-experience? Normally people would attend as much as interview to get interview-experience. In my case, I guess a single failure can also shatter me. I also guess, my preparation should be better than normal people, do u have any suggestions/tips for this?
  4. In some job requirements, it is given as " B.S or M.S in Computer Science or Equivalent practical experience" + "X years of technology experience". Does that mean, in my case I should have X + 3 ( normal bachelor's duration) years of experience?

Basically, I am confused, without-confidence and needed some help. There's not enough guidance either in leetcode-discuss or online for dropouts, especially in India. Required your help. Thanks in Advance.
