career switch to data science

Hello
I have been in a network programming/ troublehsooting role ~10 years and a sr engineer at my workplace.
It is a maninatence project, so it is heavy on troubleshooting and fixing/ coding smaller features up and I have no great experience in designing/ dev-ing big features.
I would like to advance a tech line of career but I need to develop more experitise of the development side of things for it.

I know companies seek architectural/ deisgn expertise at my lvel, but if I dont mind giving this a fresh start/ take a lower position, is there chance that I can undo the damage?

If I choose to pursue a big data career, could someone here please help me on the best way to proceed with this? I see a lot of job postings asking for a phd in this field. I am not in a position to do a full fledged phD/ other full time degree. I already have a MS comp sc.

Any advice appreciated.
