I'd worked as a SWE for 3 years at a small company, developing console/database applications. Left that and now I've worked for 13 months at a process-heavy defense company, doing Java GUI application development (for about a month now; last 12 months was spent doing testing-related paper work).

I want to move into tech but this would mean starting "from scratch" as a web developer, which is a strange feeling because I feel like I have so much history. But I don't know where I stand once I make the industry switch:

Am I too new to the industry to be asked system design questions? (I can't "design instagram/uber")
Am I too new to the industry to be hired at FAANG? (do I need to do web dev for smaller companies first or is a few personal web apps enough?)

Not to boast but just to tell you a little about my experiences, I've written unit tests and test procedures, reviewed formal system requirements, and have used build tools and version control. I've read/maintained code which implements some SW patterns (MVC, observer/observable, etc.). I also have experience developing in multiple languages: python, SQL, C#, C++, Java. On top of that, I have some domain expertise (digital signal processing, embedded systems SW development) from my college degree in CSE. So in hindsight, I've quite more "engineering/development" experience than someone coming out of bootcamp.

I've started doing leetcode and taking lessons on Udemy/Project Odin for web dev but I don't know how far I have to go to get into Microsoft/Amazon/Google (I don't really care which company cause TC will already be 33% higher).
