Hi, I have been working with Microsoft IDC for over 2 years now, completed my 2 years anniversary in June. I joined Microsoft during the second year (Summer 2017) of my engineering as an intern and got a return offer as an intern during my 3rd year summer break (Summer 2018). Finally I got PPO and joined as an intern during my 8th semester (Jan 2019) and then FTE from June 2019. See, I have been associated with Microsoft from a long time and they seem to like me. My only interview came during the 2nd year internship, which was more of a discussion rather than an interview. It was just one round where they asked a simple quick sort based question. That was it, just one question and some discussion related to career aspiration. After that I have never given any interview, not done any competitive coding, I am really average in problem solving but I had very high CGPA, around 9.4/10. Which made me eligible for the Microsoft internship in the second year. I am not dumb either, I have received 2 promotions in 2 years, started as L59, became L61 this June. My team is one of the best (at least as per my discussion with peers in other teams, Microsoft has this program called Aspire for college hires, so we all know our peers and often discuss), we get lots of internal transfer request. My manager is already getting ready to apply for my next promotion at the end of our financial year. I work in the core distributed systems area, I don't do any maintainance kind of work, or build dashboards etc. My manager seems to like me a lot as well, so, I have a lot of autonomy, in fact, everyone in the team enjoy a lot of autonomy. I had this idea of a new storage module which would improve our throughput by a wide margin, I pitched it, got it designed, approved, and then developed, tested and privately previewed it, as expected, it gave a lot of performance improvements and helped me get my first promotion. My manager kept hyping me up saying this is too good for a college hire, I kept going at it, tweaked it a bit more to get every bit of performance from the engine and then publicly previewed it and then GA. This got my second promotion.
My peers consider me as somewhat of a prodigy, a software god per se, but deep down I don't feel like I have achieved anything, yes, I did get the promotion, yes, my manager and peers like me, yet I feel lonely deep down. I still have this weird feeling that I made it to Microsoft by fluke, if I had to interview today I would've never made it. To refresh my mind, I read books sometimes (I am really into functional programming these days) but that's about it. I don't have much friends, I don't have a girlfriend (for some reason I am too scared), Between all this, Google has reached out 6 times in past two years, so, I thought of doing some LC, I got through some LC easy but I am unable to solve LC medium and hard without solution, which has added more pressure on mental health. I feel like a failure, if I am even smart if I can't even get through some DS/Algo questions, I see college kids these days going through these like a breeze, yet here I am with 2 years of exp, with no problem solving skills. I am starting to question my versatililty at work as well, I had to develop a tool in Python to monitor something, but I had to open StackOverflow countless time just to develop a simple tool. I feel like I am a one trick pony, only good in C++, Haskell and Scala. I tend to struggle in everything else. I can do things in data systems (Storage, Query Engines, Indexing...) but I am useless in application development, tooling and web. The other day, some relative asked if I can develop an application for a startup that he is planning, I had to say no since I was so bad at it, after that, I secretly gave my web skill a test and I sucked at it, I got some much flak from my family for this. Somehow after so much effort, I put this behind and have thought of interviewing with Google next year end. Planning to do LC till then, at least 30mins - 1 hour daily. But whenever I have to check solution, my mental pressure goes up through the roof and feel like pulling a plug off of this and just staying in Microsoft forever. I am kind of torn, Am I approching this the right way? Is there any advice to get mental peace? FYI, I am making full use of Microsoft's 1 to 1 help benefit to consult with a psychiatrist but she doesn't understand the tech world. She blames it on my upbringing and tells me to make peace with it, what she doesn't understand is that all asian parents are demanding, nothing is ever appreciated, there's always a notion of achieving more. It's not just me, almost every asian kid is brought up this way, they don't seem to run these kind of mental health issue.
Please, can anyone advice me from a tech perspective and if I am approaching Google Interview the right way?
