Hello everyone,

I am a developer based in Dubai with about 5 years of experience. I need your help in gaining some more insight as to what would be good. I will get straight to the point and this post will be broken down into 3 sections. Current, Offer 1 & Offer 2.

Current

I lost my job back in July 2020, due to the company shutting down in Dubai. I was working as a Frontend Developer for a moderately big blockchain startup (around 1500 employees).

After getting laid off, I interviewed a lot and finally managed to land a position at IBM as a freelancer for one of their projects, back in November. They offered me a 3 month extendable contract, meaning the 3rd month would be my notice period if they don't come back with an extension. During the 3rd month, I started interviewing again and managed to land 2 job offers. One is at a BigEcomm (Termed as Amazon Killer of the Middle East) and the other is at one of the nation's leading newspaper companies who are looking to expand their dev team.

BigEcomm

The recruiter from BigEcomm approached me in November and I went through the usual spiel of tests and technical interviews. The recruiter had said the role was for around 20K AED per month. This is the reason I entertained the interviews and went through the process. I got an offer today for 15K AED per month, this came out of the blue to be honest, as the only reason I entertained them was due to them saying the position would entail a salary of 20K+ AED.

Pros

  • Big team (around 100+ engineer)
  • Possibility of learning a lot from Senior Engineers and also working with better and new tech
  • I stay with my parents, so possibility of continuing to do so and in turn saving up on amenities

Cons

  • Reading reviews online said that staying at the office doing unpaid overtime is expected
  • Very structured, so possibility of just working on what I was hired to do
  • Lowballed me initially, so I don't know if it will get better from when I accept the offer or more red flags would show up
  • Lowest pay I have worked for in the past 2+ years.

NewsPaper Company

The news paper website company is pretty old here and has a relatively small team around 10 - 15 employees on the tech side. However, their offer is 23K AED per month. I will be seen as someone who's coming in with experience here and helping them achieve an updated website and workflow, and they are also looking to expand their tech team. They have been in the country since forever, so job security is pretty nice. Another pro I see here is that I will probably have to move out of my house, and I really am looking forward to live alone as I have never experienced in 26 years of my life.

However, its a news website so its mainly a CMS that feeds data into the frontend, there are no challenges of working with payments of black friday sales that suddenly bring the systems down.

  • Small team, so not much possibility of getting caught into office politics
  • Possibility of learning by getting my hands dirty with new stuff without any guidance
  • Higher pay
  • Move out of my family house as the office is farther away, which in turn could add some personal growth for me.
  • Chances to move up the ladder easily as I could be seen as the main decision maker

Cons

  • Not much chance to work with new tech as its a news website, which mainly publishes articles but there are chances of introducing new features, which could help my career development.
  • Moving out which inturn will add to my daily expenses

So, these are the 2 choices that I currently have. I am not sure what would be a good choice. Any input is highly appreciated. Thanks a lot!
