Interacting with the interviewer

Hi everyone. I'm preparing for my first tech interviews and one thing I feel I'm not really sure about is the 'norms' of conversing with the interviewer. For example, let's say the interviewer gives you a coding question. Should you first talk about some approaches to how you would solve the question and pick one yourself or ask the interviewer to see which option he/she would want you to go for? Does it depend on the kind of question?
I've seen posts that talk about asking questions to the interviewer but apart from clariying the question itself, should you be in the drivers seat going forward with your solution or go back and forth to see what the interviewer wants?
Thanks
